Introducing Saints: a new identity for St Michael's sport
St Michael's Grammar School has a new identity for its sports programme. From Monday 20 July, the School's teams compete as the Saints.
The name is the result of twelve months of consultation across the St Michael's community. More than 200 students took part, with prefects and student leaders consulted directly on the direction and the shortlist. Thirty Old Michaelians contributed, alongside staff and parents, a deliberate effort to hear from the people who have worn the School's colours across generations, not only those wearing them now.
Why Saints
St Michael's takes its name from St Michael, a figure remembered across centuries for courage and for standing up for what is right. Saints carries that name onto the field. Where many school sporting identities are chosen more or less at random — an animal, a colour, a borrowed emblem — this one was already ours. It does not invent something for St Michael's teams to represent. It names what they have always been asked to be.
I’ve been part of this school for 20 years, and in that time I’ve seen thousands of students proudly pull on our colours to compete. The Saints name reflects who we’ve always been as a school — a community built on pride, excellence and belonging. It’s not a new idea; it’s the first time we’ve had a name that truly captures our identity. I’m proud to see that spirit carried onto the field, the court and the pool deck by the next generation of Saints.

What it means
The Saints identity brings a new visual system to St Michael's sport, led by the new logo and brand. Uniforms and team wear will be phased in over time, in consultation with the Uniform Committee, with sporting attire updated to carry the Saints branding progressively rather than all at once. For families, nothing changes day to day. Training, fixtures and the way sport runs continue exactly as they are. What changes is the name the School's teams carry, and the identity they carry it under.
The first chance to see the Saints take the field comes at our annual football night match against Westbourne Grammar School, the Geoffrey Ryan Cup. Join us under lights at North Port Oval, Port Melbourne from 4:30pm on Wednesday 5 August.
