Our commitment to sustainability is a shared effort, guided by the School Executive and our Environmental Sustainability Committee, which brings together students, staff, and key partners.

Over the years, we’ve introduced a range of initiatives that showcase this commitment, culminating in our recognition as 2024 Campus Infrastructure and Operations School of the Year at Sustainability Victoria’s ResourceSmart Schools Awards.

Prioritising a greener future

Our commitment to sustainability is evident across every aspect of school life.
With filtered water stations, biodegradable alternatives in the café, and a carbonZero printer program, we have significantly reduced plastic and emissions across campus.

Renewable energy

100% of our electricity comes from renewable sources, supported by solar panels generating over 250kW, offsetting around 1,100 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Waste management

Campus-wide waste stations and recycling initiatives have lifted our recycling rate from 13% to 35%, with a target of 50% by the end of 2024.

Water conservation

Water-efficient irrigation, an underground rainwater tank, and pool covers reduce water loss by 95%, saving approximately 464,000 litres annually.

Energy efficiency

Replacing 1,494 fittings with LED lighting saves 142,496 kWh each year, enough to power 23 homes.

At St Michael’s, we are proud of the collective efforts of our School community in championing sustainability. Looking ahead

Aligned with our Strategic Direction Towards 2030, we have set bold targets to further reduce our environmental footprint and embed sustainability in decision-making, educational programs, and future campus developments.

As part of our Strategic Direction we have committed to bold targets around reducing our environmental footprint. It is our responsibility to take actions to sustain our School into the future and contribute to a greener world for generations to come.
