Key learning environments

Performing Arts Centre, St George’s

A heritage-listed former church transformed into a world-class theatre that was awarded the George Knight (Heritage Excellence) Award, 2024 Victorian Architecture Award. This space features:

  • Next-generation sound and lighting systems (L-ISA), similar to the one in the refurbished Opera House
  • Special sprung floor for dance and movement
  • Electronically controlled blackout curtains for various performance configurations
  • Flexible seating for almost 400 spectators

Centre for Inquiry and Innovation (CII)

A hub for research and deep learning recognised at the 2024 Australian Education Awards for innovation in student-centred design. Key features:

  • Adaptable spaces for collaborative and individual learning
  • STEM, 3D printing, and technology resources
  • Student-influenced multi-functional rooms

Allan Pizzey Building (Prep–Year 6)

Dynamic classrooms designed for:

  • Seamless learning across areas
  • Team teaching and collaboration
  • Student autonomy and self-reliance
  • Breakout spaces for study, play, and social interaction

The Octavius Brown Community Garden

Hands-on experience growing produce, caring for chickens, and understanding food sustainability and how to trace their food’s path from plant to plate. Winner of the 2014 Victorian Schools Garden Awards: “Most Habitat-Friendly Garden” and “Best Garden”.

Sisters’ Building (Years 7–12)

Purpose-built learning centre supporting senior students with a strong sense of space and community.

Frank Woods House (Years P–9)

Opened in April 1985, Frank Woods House is among St Michael’s most prominent and character-filled buildings. Today, it is home to the Years 4 to 9 Art and Design studios.

Knowledge Commons (ELC–Year 12)

The library within The Gipson Commons is called the Knowledge Commons. This space blends traditional books with digital media and ICT resources to support learning. Students also have access to AV equipment, robots, and a 3D printer.
