The Scholarship for academic excellence at St Michael’s Grammar rewards outstanding academic performance, leadership potential, and a commitment to learning.
Eligibility Criteria
The Scholarships for academic excellence (High Achiever Scholarship) is awarded to students who demonstrate strong academic performance and meet the School’s Scholarship requirements.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia within the meaning of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
- Be Years 5–11, open to new or existing students
- Sit the Scholarship Academic Test conducted at St Michael’s campus in St Kilda (unless applying from overseas).
- Provide their two most recent school reports and current NAPLAN results.
- Attend an interview if short-listed.
- Provide a Financial Statement and supporting documentation when applying for a means-tested Scholarship (if applicable).
Academic Excellence Scholarship Levels and Benefits
High Achiever Scholarship
Tuition fee remission: 25%–100% of tuition fees (excluding levies), awarded at the discretion of the Head of School.
Duration: From the year of award until completion of Year 12.
Conditions of retention: Academic performance and overall development are reviewed on an ongoing basis and formally assessed at the end of Year 6 and Year 9. Students who receive a High Achiever Scholarship are expected to remain committed to nurturing their academic talents and enriching the School community through active participation in School programs.
Application Process
for our Academic Excellence Scholarship (High Achiever Scholarship)
Sit the academic test
All applicants for this academic Scholarship are required to sit the Academic Test held at St Michael’s campus in St Kilda. Academic assessment is a key component of the Scholarship of Academic Excellence selection process.
Application review
Each academic excellence Scholarship application is reviewed holistically. Consideration is given to the student’s two most recent school reports, current NAPLAN results, academic test performance, and financial statement (if applicable).
Interview
Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview with a member of the School’s Executive. The interview supports the assessment of suitability for this Scholarship of academic excellence.
Scholarship offer
Following a full review, the Head of School will determine and confirm academic excellence Scholarship offers in writing. Awards may range from 25%–100% tuition remission (excluding levies).
Who can apply for an academic excellence Scholarship?
The High Achiever Scholarship for academic excellence is open to both new and existing students entering Years 5–11 who show general academic excellence or exceptional academic performance in a particular subject or field (amongst other areas). Applicants must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia under the meaning of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
How competitive are academic excellence Scholarships?
The number of new Scholarships awarded each year depends on the number of applicants, their strengths against the criteria, and available funding. There is no fixed number of academic Scholarships offered annually.
What academic results are required?
Applicants are assessed on their previous school reports, NAPLAN results, and performance in the academic assessment to ensure suitability for a Scholarship of academic excellence.
Are academic excellence Scholarships means-tested?
Yes, families can elect to have their High Achiever Scholarship application means-tested.
What happens if academic standards are not maintained?
Students are expected to remain committed to maintaining high academic standards. Scholarships may be reviewed if standards are not met.
How long does the Scholarship last?
Academic excellence Scholarships are awarded from the year of entry until the completion of Year 12, with student progress formally reviewed at the end of Year 6 and Year 9.
Can we apply for more than one Scholarship?
Yes. Applicants may indicate the Scholarship they wish to apply for, but students can be considered for a High Achiever Scholarship or our Contributing Citizens Scholarship based on their strengths and potential.
Are there limited academic Scholarships available?
Yes. Places are limited each year, and applications are assessed on a holistic basis, including academic performance, interview results, and overall potential.
