Technology at St Michael's

St Michael’s has a long history of leading the purposeful use of technology in education. Since establishing our first computer lab in 1983 and introducing a notebook program in 1998, we have continued to embrace innovation. Today, technology is thoughtfully integrated across the School to support creativity, collaboration, and safe, responsible digital use.

Learning devices

At St Michael’s, technology supports learning while maintaining a healthy balance with face-to-face interaction. Students are introduced to age-appropriate online learning experiences on devices throughout their schooling, helping them develop digital skills, collaborate with peers, and create innovative work.

Prep to Year 6

Students are issued a designated iPad with a keyboard case that remains at school. A curated selection of apps supports a safe and structured introduction to technology, enabling students to create, collaborate, and explore within their learning programs while developing essential digital capabilities.

Years 7 to 9

Students participate in our school-supported learning device program and are issued a Microsoft Surface Pro package. This provides a high-quality, versatile device with managed access to age-appropriate tools and our comprehensive digital learning platforms.

Students use these tools to collaborate, receive dynamic feedback, and develop advanced digital skills within and beyond the classroom. Our onsite ICT Helpdesk supports families with any technical issues, and included warranty and accidental damage coverage exchange program ensures minimal disruption to learning if repairs are required.

Years 10 to 12

Students may continue using their designated device or choose to bring their own device. Through our partner portal with educational pricing, families can select a device that aligns with their child’s learning needs and subject selections.

Leading the way as a Microsoft Lighthouse School

St Michael’s is recognised as a Microsoft Lighthouse School, a distinction held by less than 30 schools across Australia.

Leveraging tools within Microsoft 365 and our Surface device program, students are supported to co-design their learning, collaborate with peers, and develop the digital literacy skills required for the future.

This recognition reflects our commitment to providing students with safe, equitable access to technology while ensuring digital experiences align with our Teaching, Learning and Caring Framework.

“Access to technology is increasingly ubiquitous, but there’s a really important distinction to acknowledge, which is around maintaining focus on its purpose. We recognise that the use of technologies, including Generative AI, that is co-designed with our community can be a powerful tool to enhance learning, foster critical thinking and support staff and students alike. So it’s about providing students with online opportunities to collaborate, communicate and develop critical literacy and citizenship with flexibility and a sense of autonomy. Also, recognising we’re doing students a disservice if we’re enabling access without giving them the right tools and knowledge within guardrails, so that they are safe and information remains secure."
