Understanding the Terry Bux Scholarship
The Terry Bux Scholarship offers a new Year 9 student 100% coverage of school fees, levies and related expenses, including uniforms, books and devices — right through to the completion of Year 12, along with an interstate or international Immersion tour and ongoing mentorship with the Head of School. It's a scholarship built entirely through community donations, a lasting way to give a St Michael's education to a student who might not otherwise have the chance.
Terry Bux served as St Michael's school crossing supervisor for 33 years, from 1991 until his passing in 2024. Dearly loved and remembered by three generations of St Michael's students, staff and families, his passing led to an outpouring of heartfelt reflection from the community — and gave rise to a scholarship established entirely through community donations, honouring his commitment to the School's values of Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion.
About the Scholarship
What does it fund?
The Terry Bux Scholarship provides 100% coverage of school fees, levies and related expenses — including uniforms, books and devices — for a new Year 9 student, continuing through to the completion of Year 12. It also includes full coverage of one interstate or international Immersion tour in Year 9 or Year 10, and ongoing mentorship with the Head of School throughout the recipient's time at St Michael's.
Who is it for?
The scholarship is reserved for a new Year 9 student who would otherwise be unable to attend St Michael's. As a compulsorily means-tested award, it considers financial need, sound academic results, and a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership — reflecting the values Terry held dear during his 33 years at the School gate.
Why does it matter?
Every scholarship changes the trajectory of a young person's life — and often their family's too. This one carries something extra: it's a living tribute to a man who quietly showed up for the St Michael's community every single day for over three decades.
When do applications for the scholarship close?
Applications close on 7 September 2026, for entry into Year 9 in 2027.
Key Information
- Applicants must be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.
- This Scholarship will be offered to a student entering Year 9 2027 from the year of award until the completion of Year 12, subject to progress.
- The Scholarship recipient will be assigned a mentor to support their learning journey and involvement in school life.
- In keeping with our commitment to assist students who otherwise may not be able to benefit from a St Michael’s education, a family’s financial situation is carefully considered. All applications must complete the Financial Statement for Means Testing Form.

Selection Process
St Michael’s takes a holistic approach to the Scholarship process. When determining which applicant will be offered the Scholarship, the following is considered:
- Information about the student provided in the Scholarship Applicant Statement and if shortlisted, requested enrolment information
- The student’s two most recent school reports and current NAPLAN results
- Academic test results
- The applicant's understanding of Terry Bux's legacy and his impact on the St Michael's Community
- Financial Statement and supporting information for Means-Testing
- The interview

Only information requested during the application process will be accepted. St Michael’s will not accept any additional information. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Head of the School, and terms and conditions for successful candidates will apply.
