Who was Terry Bux?
Terry Bux served as St Michael's school crossing supervisor for 33 years, from 1991 until his passing in 2024. Dearly loved and remembered by three generations of St Michael's students, staff and families, his passing led to an outpouring of heartfelt reflection from the community — and gave rise to a scholarship established entirely through community donations, honouring his commitment to the School's values of Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion.

Understanding the Terry Bux Scholarship
The Terry Bux Scholarship will be awarded to a student new to the St Michael's community who is entering Year 9 in 2027.
This exceptional scholarship provides 100% coverage of all school tuition fees, levies and Victorian Government Payroll Tax, as well as essential educational expenses including uniforms, textbooks and a personal device, supporting the recipient throughout their entire journey to the completion of Year 12.
In addition, the scholarship includes the cost of one interstate or international Immersion experience in Year 9 or Year 10, ensuring the recipient can fully participate in the rich learning opportunities that are a hallmark of a St Michael’s education.
The successful scholar will also benefit from ongoing mentorship from the Head of School, providing guidance, encouragement and support from Year 9 through to Year 12.
The Terry Bux Scholarship is especially significant as it has been funded entirely through the generosity of the St Michael’s community. Created as a lasting tribute to Terry’s legacy, it reflects a shared commitment to opening the door to a transformative St Michael’s education for a student who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience it.

Key Information
- Applicants must be Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.
- As a means-tested Scholarship, the famililes of all applicants will be required to submit detailed financial information
- This Scholarship will be offered to a student new to the St Michael's community entering Year 9, 2027, until the completion of Year 12 (subject to progress).
- The Scholarship recipient will be mentored by the Head of the School to support their learning journey and involvement in school life.
- An important part of the Terry Bux Scholarship is the expectation that the successful recipient will share their story and journey with the St Michael’s community throughout their time at the School and beyond. In doing so, they will help us celebrate the generosity of our donors, honour Terry’s legacy, and inspire future scholarship recipients to embrace the opportunities a St Michael’s education can offer.
Selection Process
St Michael’s takes a holistic approach to the Scholarship process. When determining which applicant will be offered the Scholarship, the following is considered:
- Information about the student provided in the Scholarship Applicant Statement and if shortlisted, requested enrolment information
- The student’s two most recent school reports and current NAPLAN results
- Academic test results
- The applicant's understanding of Terry Bux's legacy and his impact on the St Michael's Community
- Financial Statement and supporting information for Means-Testing (families will need to email scholarships@stmichaels.vic.edu.au directly to request the relevant documents)
- The interview

Who can apply for the Terry Bux Scholarship?

What does the scholarship cover?
The scholarship provides:

- One interstate or international Immersion experience/trip in Year 9 or Year 10

Are family financial circumstances considered in the scholarship selection process?
Yes. The Terry Bux Scholarship is a means-tested scholarship. Families are required to provide detailed financial information, including the last two years of tax returns, as part of the application process.
How important are academic results in the scholarship selection process?
St Michael's takes a holistic approach when assessing applicants. The selection process considers a range of factors, including academic ability, school reports, NAPLAN results, the applicant statement, financial circumstances, interview performance, and the student's understanding of Terry Bux's legacy.
What documents are required to apply?
Applicants will need to provide:
- Applicant Statement
- Financial Statement for means-testing
- Last two years of parent/guardian tax returns
- Two most recent school reports
- Year 7 NAPLAN results
What is iDAT, and why is the test online?
iDAT is the organisation that administers the online scholarship testing. Registered applicants will receive instructions on test registration and technical requirements. The online format allows students to complete the assessment from home at a convenient time on the allocated testing date.
What qualities will St Michael's be looking for?
The School will highly regard students who demonstrate qualities aligned with Terry Bux's legacy and the School's values of Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion, alongside their academic potential and willingness to contribute to the community.
Are scholarship recipients expected to contribute to the St Michael's community?
Yes. An important aspect of the scholarship is that recipients will share their experiences and journey with the St Michael's community during their time at the School and beyond, helping honour Terry Bux's legacy and recognise the generosity of donors.
What happens after I register my interest?
After registration, St Michael's will:
- Provide the application and financial forms.
- Supply a secure upload link for supporting documents.
- Issue instructions for registering with iDAT.
- Arrange the next stages of the selection process, including testing and potential interviews after the exam has taken place.
