A month of merriment, record-breaking fundraising and awareness for four worthy causes

Over the past four weeks, St Michael’s has been celebrating the annual Merry Month of May, which sees the entire School community, led by our students, come together to raise awareness and funds for four different charities.

Throughout the month our Student Leaders have led a range of activities that have raised a Merry Month of May record-breaking $40,703 to support the four charities they chose to support; Brainwave, SisterWorks, Weenthunga Health Network and the Leukaemia Foundation.

“The Merry Month of May has certainly been a time of merriment, all in the service of four excellent causes,” said Head of the School, Mrs Terrie Jones. “I really value the way in which the community unites during this month and I want to thank all of the staff who support our students in their efforts to raise awareness and funds for their chosen causes.”

Each week, during the Merry Month of May, the School community participated in a series of fundraising activities which included a Staff versus Students Quidditch Match, the annual Staff versus Students Great Debate, a Lip Sync Battle, cultural workshops run by SisterWorks, the ‘St Michael’s Biggest Ever BBQ’, and more!

“We’re really proud of the activities we arranged to raise awareness of our charities,” said Year 12 student and Co-captain of the School (7-12), Bas. “In particular, the assembly we ran at the beginning of the month where we organised representatives from our chosen charities to come along and speak to students and staff, which was really valuable in raising awareness for our causes.”

In keeping with tradition, the School again supported The Leukaemia Foundation to help find a cure for leukaemia. During the final week of Merry Month of May, 30 students participated in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave and raised an amazing $32,942.

Students participated by either shaving their head or colouring their hair and staff member Mr Jeremy Elton also shaved his beard!

Leukaemia Foundation Community Supporters Co-ordinator, Laura Gathoni, visited the School last week to watch the students participate in the World’s Greatest Shave.

“St Michael’s has been a huge supporter of the Leukaemia Foundation over the years,” said Laura. “We are incredibly thankful as the funds raised will give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need in addition to funding vital blood cancer research.”

In addition to the weekly events, the students also ran a raffle where the winner of the first prize received a five-night stay for two at the Kimberley Sands Resort in Broome.

“We would like to thank everyone for all your support and participation, in particular, the students and staff who have volunteered to help us run activities and Mr Phyland for all his support throughout the month,” said Year 12 student and Co-captain of the School (7-12), Sara.

St Michael’s Head of Community Service, Mr Murray Phyland works tirelessly in the lead up to and during the Merry Month of May and his enthusiasm is infectious.
