St Michael’s Grammar School 130 Year Anniversary Celebrating Progress

At St Michael’s, 2025 is a year in which we will proudly celebrate our School’s 130th anniversary, and our history as leaders and innovators in education.

Established by the Community of the Sisters of the Church as a girls’ school, from our foundation St Michael’s has been renowned for our inclusivity, innovation, and commitment to the wider community. The Sisters were often ahead of their time in their efforts to ensure that the girls in their care had a first-class education. This forward thinking also led to the decision in the 1970s that it was time for St Michael’s to become co-educational, decades ahead of similar schools. Our students now enjoy the benefits of our 50 years’ experience in providing the best opportunities for students of all genders.

We take great pride in our rich history, our reputation for student wellbeing, and the holistic education we provide, which allows each student to flourish. All this is based on our enduring values of Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion.

The theme for our 130th year is Celebrating Progress, and our focus word is Legacy. Accordingly, we will be taking the time to reflect on our story of institutional change, celebrating what we have achieved, and looking to the future of St Michael’s.

We will be acknowledging the many people throughout our history who have left a lasting impression on our School community, and today’s outstanding staff, students, parents and Old Michaelians who continue to make us proud with their achievements and contributions.

The Old Michaelian Contributing Citizen Awards

It was with great excitement that we launched our inaugural Old Michaelian Contributing Citizen Awards in June 2024.  A callout to our community for nominations was rewarded with a diverse list of nominees who have made outstanding contributions to the wider world in many and varied ways.  The calibre of the nominees was very impressive and the Judging Panel deliberated for some time to choose the inaugural recipients.

Find out who the inaugural recipients of the Old Michaelian Contributing Citizen Awards are and how to make a nomination for the 2025 awards here.

Old Michaelian community

St Michael’s has had an alumni association since 1911. More than 7000 Old Michaelians are still connected with the School, and alumni news is shared across the Old Michaelian network through the Old Michaelian Facebook group, The Crest Magazine and email updates.

Our Old Michaelian community makes a wonderful contribution to enriching our students’ experience across the School. We very much value their involvement and it is also important to us that our Old Michaelians feel connected to the School and each other.

If you wish to update your details to ensure you receive communication from the School by mail, including reunion invitations, you can update your details at any time. If you would like to share a story, notable achievement or community notice about an Old Michaelian or you wish to make a contribution to our School life in some way please email us at engagement@stmichaels.vic.edu.au

Reunions

Reunions bring our Old Michaelians’ rich knowledge of the School’s history to life. Every five years, past students are invited back to the School to renew friendships, connect with past teachers, tour the campus, and ask questions regarding recent developments. Please visit our Events page for booking details as they become available closer to the date of each reunion.

Past Staff Remembrance Service and Reception

On Friday 1 November 2024 more than 120 past staff, returned to the School for an inaugural Past Staff Reunion, involving a Remembrance Service and Reception.
