St Michael’s celebrated Pride Week from Monday 20 June – Friday 24 June. This year’s theme was ‘Be Brave, Be Strong, Be You’ with the key focus on empowerment of self and others.
On the last day of Term 2 the School hosted a casual clothes day. Students were invited to wear a colour assigned to their year level, then participate in creating a Human Pride Flag on the oval at Lunchtime.
Student activities throughout the week included: selling badges, running a bake sale, flying the Pride Flag all week, dressing the School in colourful pride bunting and a lunchtime BBQ.
Students were encouraged to bring a gold coin donation on Friday to raise money for BlaQ and the Pride Centre.
BlaQ work with marginalised LGBTQIA+ First Nations youth and the Pride Centre, based in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda is the first purpose-built centre for Australia’s LGBTIQ+ communities. They both work towards equality and promote a welcoming and safe space for people of the LGBTIQ+ community. Both organisations work to amplify the voices of LGBTIQ+ people and provide resources and services so their communities can thrive.
