Merry Month of May begins

Generosity, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to making a difference are all at the heart of our collective efforts for the month of May. Last week, with great excitement and anticipation, the School community led by our Year 12 Leaders launched our annual Merry Month of May campaign.

Throughout May, our students work tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for important causes they have identified. This year, those causes are WWF Australia, Red Dust, Emerge and The Leukaemia Foundation. Each week in May, fundraising efforts are focused on one charity with the first being WWF Australia.

St Michael’s Co-Captains Tassara (12B) and Nicholas (12M) are excited to support the chosen charities, while also creating fun opportunities for engagement within the community. “These charities were chosen by the team of 16 prefects and we feel they represent a broad range of causes aligned with our school values and community. One of the best things about MMOM is the creative activities the Year 12 students come up with to fundraise, which bring lots of life and energy to the school grounds.”

In addition to fundraising, the students seek to raise awareness of the role of these organisations, so that there is a better understanding of the important work they do and why it is relevant to our students. The range of charities our student leaders have selected and the breadth of social justice issues they aim to shine a light on, speaks to our students’ strong sense of social conscientiousness, citizenship and empathy.

The festivities ‘kicked off’ on Monday, with the students versus staff soccer match. While the staff ultimately won the game with a winning goal from Director of Sport, Mr Tyren Montebruno, the real winner was of course, the charity of the week – WWF Australia.

On Wednesday, our students prepared and served a pancake breakfast on Coleman Walk, a new initiative introduced by the student leaders. “This year, we had the idea to run a hot chocolate and pancake stall on campus on Wednesday mornings throughout May. We ran the first one last week and it was a big success. It was great to see the students and staff generously support the idea, and we even sold out of Pancakes,” said Tassara and Nicholas.

To wrap up the week, students and families generously donated baked goods for the MMOM Bake Sale. On Friday during recess, students were able to purchase some delightful home-made creations, including popcorn honey joys, lemon slices, mars bar balls, chocolate brownies, cupcakes, cake and biscuits.

Once again, the Merry Month of May raffle will run, this year with a twist. The raffle prizes will be a mystery, with prizes awarded randomly from a pool. Members of the St Michael’s community are able to purchase tickets via the School’s portal, SchoL.

It is fitting that again this year, the MMOM will conclude with our annual Giving Day on Thursday 25 May. Giving Day is an opportunity for the extended School community to come together and help raise money in support of our All Rounder Scholarships, awarded to students who do not have the financial means to start, or continue, their St Michael’s education.

Thank you to everyone involved in making the Merry Month of May possible and all who donate their time, in-kind items or funds. We are looking forward to all the wonderful activities our student leaders have planned for May.
