Incorporating the beauty and vastness of Australia into the learning process, our Outdoor Education Program has been an important part of the educational journey at St Michael’s for more than 30 years. School camps conducted for Forms 3, 4 and 5 (Years 9, 10 and 11) in 1981 marked the beginning of what has now become the Exodus Program. The School’s close association with The Outdoor Education Group (OEG) enables the delivery of the St Michael’s Outdoor Education program from Years 4–11. This partnership includes permanent OEG staff based at the School, providing seamless delivery and expert advice to the entire
St Michael’s community.

Outdoor Education is compulsory for students in Years 3–11. The emphasis is on personal growth through outdoor experiences, focusing on three strands: self, others and the natural world. Each year level has a specific theme, such as ‘Friends and Foundation’ in Year 7 and ‘Action and Reflection’ in Year 8, designed to build sequentially on students’ experiences.

Sequential Exodus Program:

  • Year 3: Overnight experience at the School (1 day)
  • Year 4: Camp Angahook, Aireys Inlet (Exodus – 3 days)
  • Year 5: Camp Jungai, Rubicon Valley (Exodus – 4 days)
  • Year 6: Marysville and Cathedral Range State Park (Exodus – 5 days)
  • Year 7: Mornington Peninsula (Exodus – 5 days) and Lake Eildon (Journey Skills – 3 days)
  • Year 8: Murray River (Exodus – 5 days)
  • Year 9: Choice of three 5-day Exodus programs – Grampians Rock Climbing; Goulburn Valley Rail Trail Cycling or Goulburn River Rafting
  • Year 10: Grampians (Exodus – 5 days)
  • Year 11: Choice of 6 Exodus programs – Kosciuszko to the Coast Expedition (20 days); Cycle Tasmania (8 days); Rock Climbing, Sustainability, White-water Rafting and Coastal Experience (all 5 days)

Skills Extension Program

In addition to the compulsory Outdoor Education Program, students can also participate in the voluntary Skills Extension Program (SEP). SEP trips are designed to be fun, with a focus on the development of outdoor skills, friendships and social engagement. Year 6 students can choose to participate in activities including indoor rock-climbing, sailing and orienteering. For students in Years 7–12, the SEP includes horse-riding, skiing, snowboarding, snorkelling and surfing.
