First week of Merry Month of May comes to a close

Friday 6 May marked the end of the first week of the Merry Month of May (MMoM), and the second Community Action Day for 2022. Students and staff all took part in the festivities, which included fundraising for our chosen charities, a very special Astor Assembly for Years 7-12 and a pyjama-themed Casual Clothes Day for the entire School.

Week 1 of MMoM was focused on raising funds for Girls from Oz (g-oz). The charity aims to improve education and employment outcomes for students in remote Australia, particularly Aboriginal girls and young women. The g-oz program uses a tried and tested performing arts engagement model developed over 30 years by the Australian School of Performing Arts, to engage and re-engage females living in some of the most at-risk communities in Australia. Fundraising events included selling tickets for the MMoM Raffle (buy tickets here), along with the classic St Michael’s BBQ and a raft of exciting activities across K-12.

Students and staff from Years 7-12 were excited to gather at the first in-person Astor Assembly in over two years. Charlie (11B) played the ukelele as guests entered the theatre, providing a very merry rendition of popular melodies. Once the proceedings got underway, our Senior Leaders provided an update on the different weeks and charities of MMoM.

During the assembly, Mr Gerard Houlihan, Acting Head of the School, spoke about the importance of transitions to a wonderful future, fostering belonging and connection, and having a sense of purpose. Those in attendance were also treated to a Pitch Perfect-themed film clip featuring singing, rapping, and celebrating the charities and events of MMoM.

Thank you to all our students and staff for starting off MMoM with a bang! We can’t wait to see what is achieved in the weeks ahead, and we look forward to raising more funds and awareness for our chosen charities.
