Back to Basics – What you Need to Know about reading in the Early Years

Have you wondered what you can do to support your child in the early years of schooling to facilitate their literacy development? In this session, we cover the fundamentals of what to expect when your child is learning to read. We explore what early years literacy looks like and the approaches to learning to read. Areas we will cover are:

  • What is reading?
  • What do successful readers do?
  • Learning to read and reading to learn: comprehension strategies
  • Unpacking phonics
  • Using decodable and predictable texts
  • Concepts of print
  • What you can do at home to support the development of reading
  • Q&A

This session will be run on site at St Michael’s Grammar School, by our expert educators, and is open to current parents and parents within the local community. This session will demystify the teaching and learning of reading in the early years of primary schooling.
