Code Camp – Discovering the world of coding and digital technology

During the final week of the school holidays, students from Prep to Year 6 immersed themselves in the world of coding and digital technology at our very first Code Camp holiday program.

St Michael’s partnered with children’s coding education provider, Code Camp, to offer two school holiday programs; Little Heroes for students aged 5-6 years old and Spark for students aged 7-12 years old.

“Code Camp is thrilled to have partnered with St Michael’s to deliver our flagship school holiday programs,” said Co-Founder of Code Camp, Hayley Markham. “At Code Camp, kids aged 5-12 develop their coding skills, from drag and drop, right through to JavaScript – the language of the web!”

Code Camp was led by experienced instructors who introduced students to the exciting world of coding and digital creation.

Students who participated in the Little Heroes program learnt to build and code iPad based games and enjoyed solving problems with technology, puzzles, apps and more!

I like Code Camp a lot, my favourite thing has been learning about code and putting all the things we learnt into a puzzle. Winnie, Prep

During the highly interactive Spark program, students learnt to code using Code Camp’s own software that teaches children ‘drag and drop’ coding. This enables them to focus on the logic without getting confused by complicated syntax.

Each student in this program built their very own game which is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, which they were able to share with their friends and family!

Some students who participated in the Spark program have shared their thoughts on Code Camp below:

Code Camp has been really good, I like creating and playing my own games and seeing what other people have created.Cai, Year 6
I like coding because in the game I get to make my own world with characters and everything!Alexis, Year 2
The coding has been easy to understand, the most challenging thing for me has been getting started with the characters for my game.Elliot, Year 4
Code Camp is fun, I’m really enjoying making my own game!Ezra, Year 2

It was wonderful to see the students developing their STEM skills and building their confidence with coding through the Code Camp holiday program. We look forward to hosting more programs like this in the future as we continue to grow the School’s Extended Tuition Program.
