Stories from the Crest Episode Five: Maverick Newman and Lily Hibberd

Our new podcast series, Stories from the Crest, shares the varied stories of Old Michaelians, and has been created by TV producer, Claudia Nankervis (OM 2012), and emerging filmmaker, Fraser Pemberton (OM 2011). Together they explore the lives of Old Michaelians who share a common link through their school, but have unique stories to tell.

In episodes one to four we have heard the stories of disability advocate Mandy McCracken (OM 1991), award-winning cinematographer Max Walter (OM 2012), esteemed medical researcher Judith Whitworth (OM 1961), Hollywood film director Patrick Hughes (OM 1996), actor Sean Rees-Wemyss (OM 2015), Olympic shooter Elena Galiabovitch (OM 2007), AFLW Rising Star award winner Isabel Huntington (OM 2017), and Olympic mogul skier Brodie Summers (OM 2011).

Today, in episode five, we hear from award-winning performing artist Maverick Newman (OM 2015) and artistic innovator Dr Lily Hibberd (OM 1990).

Maverick Newman is a composer, writer, producer and actor who, over a short period of time, has been nominated for six Green Room Awards. After studying Music Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Maverick has produced and performed in a range of ensembles. He won the Green Room Award for Best Original Songs for Cabaret in 2019 for his cabaret, ‘Tis The Season.’

An artist and writer, Lily Hibberd has worked in collaboration with communities and fellow artists to tell old and new stories based on places, memories and histories. While practicing in performance, painting, photography, video and installation, Lily’s work has been featured widely in both Australia and France. She is the founder of Parragirls Memory Project and founding editor of un Magazine, as well as the recipient of a number of awards, including the National Prize for the UBS Art Award, judged by art historian Sir Nicholas Serota.
