Mr Gerard Houlihan Appointed New Head of St Michael’s

After an extensive selection process for the new Head of St Michael’s Grammar School, Mr Gerard Houlihan, current Deputy Head, has been appointed to the role from 17 September 2022.

Gerard is known as a well-respected and highly credentialled educator who has served in his current role of Deputy Head since 2015. Having commenced at the School in 2001, Gerard possesses an unrivalled depth and breadth of knowledge about St Michael’s. He has occupied positions across the School including Head of Science and Technology, Head of Breen House, Head of Information Technology and Learning Technologies, Dean of Teaching and Learning and Head of the Senior School.  Gerard has also twice acted as the Head of the School for periods in 2017 and 2022.

Throughout Gerard’s time at the School, he has been responsible for significant innovations such as the SchoL-AR online learning program. Most notably, he was responsible for the design and implementation of the School’s Wellbeing Triage and Restorative Practices Framework, Student Profile Dashboard and Navigator program, which ensured that all students and families were well supported during successive COVID-19 lockdowns. As a member of the Executive, Gerard has also been integral to the realisation of the School’s Strategic Direction: Towards 2030, and has played a substantial role in the implementation of several of the strategic priorities.

Gerard’s appointment is the result of a comprehensive selection process by leading education recruitment firm, Odgers Berndtson.

Gerard’s extensive understanding of the School and role in developing the Strategic Direction will help maintain the momentum already built under Mrs Terrie Jones’ leadership, ensuring stability and continuity for our community. There can be no doubt that Gerard’s values are very much aligned to St Michael’s, and his passion for the School is apparent for all to see.

Terrie will continue to lead the School until her departure at the end of Term 3, working closely with Gerard as Deputy Head while undertaking a thorough transition and handover process.

The Board warmly congratulates Gerard on his appointment and has every confidence that he will build on Terrie’s wonderful legacy. St Michael’s is very fortunate to benefit from the leadership of two outstanding educators whose credentials and commitment to St Michael’s are beyond question.
