In Years 7 and 8, the curriculum reflects the belief that students in early secondary schooling benefit from participating in a broad range of core learning opportunities. Students have the option of taking French (beginning or continuing), Italian (beginning), Japanese (beginning or continuing) or Chinese (continuing) in Year 7.
Students in Year 7 at St Michael’s get to experience a wide range of subjects, including Art, Coding, Food Technology, Music, Drama and Dance. We also have a dedicated wellbeing curriculum that covers a range of topics relevant to Year 7 including digital citizenship, respectful relationships, social skills, managing stress, and organisation.’Ms Kate Kelly, (Director 7-9)
A key feature of starting Year 7 at St Michael’s is gaining a sense of belonging to the School via the House structure.
Being part of a House means that I always feel like I have a place at school – it’s a real sense of belonging. Sarum, the House I am affiliated with, is a very tight and friendly group. There is definitely a sense of pride – it’s hard to explain, but you just feel it. Students participate in Exodus (the School’s sequential Outdoor Education Program), attend Positive Learning classes and have a daily tutorial with their House group. Importantly though, they are placed in mixed-House classes for the majority of subjects.
House groups also provide many leadership opportunities for students. Year 7 students are mentored by students in older year levels, beginning at the start of the year when Year 12 leaders run an induction evening for Year 7 students to introduce them to their House group.
This connection to House is no more visible than on Valedictory Day; the final day of School for Year 12 students. A personal farewell for each student is given by members of their House.
The co-curricular program at St Michael’s is designed to introduce students to a broad range of experiences in the areas of Outdoor Education, Performing Arts (Drama, Dance and Music), Sport (competitive and recreational), Public Speaking, Debating and Chess.
Students also have an opportunity to participate in a number of coordinated clubs, which meet regularly throughout the year.
Sport is an important element of a student’s wellbeing and individual development. In Year 7, students take part in the interschool sport program. The options available to girls and boys are:
