Year 10 students explore career pathways

Last week, 250 students and parents attended the Year 10 Career Pathways Evening and VCE Subject Expo.

The evening was the first in a series of events designed to support our Year 10 students as they undertake the subject selection process for their VCE years at St Michael’s.

“It was terrific to see staff and students connecting and having discussions around subject choices and VCE pathways throughout the various faculty displays,” said Mr Ben Jeacocke, Director (10-12). “The purpose of this event is to prepare students for VCE subject choices, focussing on expanding possibilities to provide students with a sense of resolve and motivation for the coming months.”

The VCE Subject Expo was an opportunity for Year 10 students and their parents to explore areas of interest by talking to Heads of Faculty and VCE subject teachers to assist the students in making their VCE subject choices.

“I found the night really helpful as I was able to learn more about each of the VCE subjects that interest me,” said Year 10 student, Grace. “I was actually quite surprised to find that I was interested in studying Legal Studies when I had been more focussed on subjects like Sport,  Biology and Psychology.”

It was wonderful to have parents join us to learn about the subjects their children are interested in and support their children in making subject choices.

“We enjoyed talking to all the teachers and found the detailed information and advice extremely helpful, informative and worthwhile in assisting my daughter Elli to make some informed decisions about choosing the right VCE subjects next year in regards to particular study and career pathways she is interested in,” said St Michael’s parent, Mrs Pina Martelli.

I appreciated the level of effort the staff put into coaching and supporting students to consider what they really want to do, and are capable of doing, so they can make considered decisions about future career aspirations.Mr Rob Galt, St Michael's parent

Following the VCE Subject Expo, St Michael’s Careers Counsellor Miss Robyn McKenzie presented an outline of the career support available to Year 10 students, and Mr Barry Darnell from Career Analysts presented on the Morrisby Report, a career guidance tool undertaken by all Year 10 students.

“I found the presentation about the Morrisby Report really helpful,” said Grace. “When we got home my mum and I looked at the report again as we had a much better understanding of the graphs and results.”

It was a fantastic evening, and we thank the staff, students and parents who made this event such a success.

Our next event which supports students as they explore future career paths is the Tertiary and Careers Expo. The expo is being held on Tuesday 21 May in The Gipson Commons and will give Years 10-12 students and their families a window into the vast array of opportunities open to them as they continue their learning journey beyond St Michael’s.
