Remembering the Venerable George Lucas OAM

It is with sadness that St Michael’s announces the passing of Archdeacon (Emeritus) George Bromley Lucas on 2 February 2019. Archdeacon Lucas was a member of the St Michael’s Grammar School Council and its Chairman from 1981-1984.

Many Old Michaelians will remember the Lucas Room, a meeting and multimedia room on the first floor of the Vicars Foote Hall Building, which was named in his honour. Upon the demolition of the Vicars Foote Hall Building, the Lucas Theatre in the Gipson Commons was created and is named in his honour.

Archdeacon Lucas graduated with a degree in Arts and Theology from Trinity College, University of Melbourne and served in the Diocese of St Arnaud, at Mildura, Sea Lake and Charlton. He was Director of Youth and Religious Education from 1958 to 1964 and Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of St Arnaud. From 1964 to 1970 he was Vicar of St Matthew’s, Cheltenham, and from 1970 to 1985 was Vicar of St George’s Anglican Church, Malvern. His other appointments include Inter-Church Trade and Industry Mission Chaplain and Archdeacon of Brighton from 1982 to 1995, incumbent East Frankston 1985 to 1995 and Archdeacon (Emeritus) 1995.

Archdeacon Lucas received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours in 2006 for service to the Anglican Church of Australia, particularly the Diocese of Melbourne.

Archdeacon Lucas will be fondly remembered as playing a key role in the School’s history, and this week, the School’s flag will fly at half-mast in remembrance of him. To honour his service to the School, Archdeacon Lucas’s name has been added to the St Michael’s Year’s Mind Book, which records anniversaries of significance to the wider School community. This will ensure that he will be remembered in prayer at Eucharist Services held in the School’s Chapel of St Michael and All Angels at appropriate times each year, and that his memory will be honoured by St Michael’s Grammar School in perpetuity.

A funeral will be held on Friday 8 February, 2019 at 10.30am at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Surrey Hills. Please join us and hold Archdeacon Lucas and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
