Celebrating pride and inclusion at St Michael’s

Today, our Year 12 student leaders hosted the School’s inaugural Pride and Inclusion Day which aimed to raise awareness, acceptance and inclusion for the LGBTIQ community.

The students organised a number of activities to celebrate the day including a Pride Wall in Dolly’s Café where the School community wrote what love means to them, a dance party on the Coleman Walk and encouraged staff and students to wear a touch of rainbow for the day.

We are proud of the School’s commitment to being safe, caring and inclusive and I would like to thank our student leaders for ensuring that our community’s commitment is lived, active and visible.Mrs Terrie Jones, Head of the School

Students from across the School also shared what love means to them in the video below.

Year 12 student and Prefect, Joe McCombe, was a strong advocate for Pride and Inclusion Day at St Michael’s.

“The St Michael’s community is already very accepting, so Pride and Inclusion Day at St Michael’s is about encouraging inclusiveness and a safe environment for all students, and raising awareness that despite marriage equality occurring two years ago, LGBTIQ students still face a lot of hurdles,” said Joe.

As part of our Pride and Inclusion Day celebrations, special guest speakers Deputy Chair of the Victorian Pride Centre (VPC), Mr Stuart Kollmorgen OAM and the Centre’s Coordinator Ms Stacey Halls, joined us at the Years 7-12 Astor Assembly to speak to students about the Centre’s mission and shared the stunning architectural vision for the new VPC building which is currently being developed.

It was a wonderful day of celebration and we would like to thank our student leaders for organising this event and raising awareness of the issues that continue to impact the LGBTIQ community.
