Recently, students from Years 7 – 11 participated in the Australia Mathematics Competition (AMC), which sees over 190,000 students attempt to solve 30 mathematical problems in 75 minutes.
Introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students, the competition has grown and spread internationally, with students in more than 30 countries attempting the same problems.
The practical problems test mathematical thinking and questions are designed to be answered just as quickly with, or without a calculator. The problems get more difficult as the competition progresses and by the end the questions are challenging for even the most gifted students.
Today, we’re pleased to share the news that over 25% of St Michael’s participants achieved a Distinction or High Distinction.
Distinctions are awarded to the top 20% of students and High Distinctions are awarded to the top 3% of students in the Competition. The St Michael’s students who received a High Distinction or Distinction were presented with a certificate acknowledging their achievement at the Years 7-12 Assembly at the Astor Theatre today.
