Book Week 2022 – Dreaming with eyes open

National Book Week is the annual celebration of children’s literature and is a highlight in the School’s calendar, providing an opportunity for students to deeply engage in creative writing and reading.

This year, Book Week at St Michael’s was held from 22-30 August and featured a collection of engaging presentations, events and activities for students across the School.

With The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week theme of ‘dreaming with eyes open’, students and staff were inspired to bring their favourite book characters to life by creating costumes for the annual Kindergarten to Year 6 Book Parade.

Many creative and unique costumes were on display and we thank the parent community for coming to support the parade.

A number of awards for outstanding costumes were given on the day by the panel of judges; Mr Houlihan, Mrs Armatas, Mr Zito and Father McKie.

Most original costume: 3 Year Old Kinder student Oskar as The Little Fire Truck

Best homemade costume: Year 6 student Katya as Alice in Wonderland

Best group costume: A group of Year 6 students as Gru and his minions

Best staff costume: Year 5 teacher Mrs Niere as the Paper Bag Princess

Throughout the week, we were very fortunate to have four authors visit the School to speak to both Junior and Senior students.

Our Margaret Thomas House Kindergarten to Year 3 students participated in an engaging session with author and illustrator Maxine Beneba Clarke who shared her stories and creative process with the students. Maxine Beneba Clarke also presented to our Year 12 cohort.

Andrew McDonald shared his novels with the Years 4-6 classes, Emily Gale spoke to the Year 7 students and Melissa Keil presented to the Year 8 cohort.

During Book Week, the Junior School also supported the Indigenous Literacy Foundation by running the Great Book Swap, providing the opportunity for students to purchase quality books at a great price. Students enjoyed looking through the many options and selecting a new book to read and enjoy.

We thank Ms George, Dr Lucas and Ms Spellman, the Knowledge Commons Team, for providing these events and opportunities for students.
